Nore Barn Wood North – 1.4 acres (0.5 hectares)

area of reeds with small brackish
pond on the southern margin
·
widely spaced crack willows dominate
the central wooded area – many have been pollarded
·
the shrub layer is dominated by
bramble and willow-herb
·
clump of alder in the eastern part
of the wood
·
goat and crack willow in the wetter
areas of the northern part
·
oak and sycamore with some hazel
understorey in the dryer zones of the northern part
Nore Barn Wood South – 6 acres (2.4 hectares)
·
the site is a good example of
woodland succession, being further developed in the western end
·
eastern end is open grassland with
patches of hawthorn and some elder
·
central area has less open grassy
areas, and some oak trees within the hawthorn
·
western end has groups of oak over
similar aged tall hawthorn trees, with occasional ash.
·
the canopy is dense in the central
and western areas and there is little ground flora as a result
·
a few field maple, spindle and beech
saplings are present
·
a number of young holly bushes, a
few yew saplings and butcher’s broom are in the understorey
·
the hedge which forms the northern
boundary, following the Wayfarers Walk, contains a diversity of mainly native
trees and shrubs
